Every property insurance agent in CA cringes during the month of October because we are bracing for fire season. Low water moisture in the air mixed with high heat and brush can turn a careless cigarette into a devastating wild fire. However, in December we witnessed some of the worst wildfires in history and they were at our doorstep. So much for breathing a sigh of relief…
People rarely review their insurance policies until after some kind of event happens. After an auto accident, robbery or destructive fire is not the time to understand your coverage. Are you properly covered? Do you have the proper limits and deductibles? Who is my agent and who do I call if I need something? Good questions to know now and review at least every year so you are prepared.
If you have been with the same carrier and/or agent for many years you may be missing coverage due to your common life events. Maybe you upgraded your home, added a room or updated the roof, all events to talk to your agent about. Who is living in your home? Did the kids move out or did you have another baby? Large events such as these can trigger your agent to ask better questions to find the coverage you need to protect your home.
As much as we want rain in Southern California we have to protect from mudslides in burn areas. After the fires are out, the damage from a mudslide can be just as bad if not worse because they can happen without warning. Learn to protect yourself if you find yourself next to a burn area and hillside. Just because you got through one disaster does not mean you could get hit with another one.
Call your agent or broker and take 5 minutes to review your current coverage. The extra money could be the difference of many thousands of dollars in a claim. Listen to the experts and continue to take your life Up One Level!
