January’s students and their families attended a luncheon sponsored by the Perris and Menifee Chambers of Commerce along with local businesses and organizations.  Principals and teachers from each high school shared stories about the students and they each received certificates of recognition, numerous gifts, congratulations and encouragement from local, county, state and federal dignitaries.

Paloma Valley High School’s Student of the Month is Esmeralda Garcia.  Esmeralda currently holds a 4.3 GPA and is involved in a number of school organizations.  Esmeralda’s teacher, Ms. O’Connell, stated that Esmeralda is an extraordinary, humble, and ambitious person who encourages, and pushes others to do their best. Esmeralda shared that the last four years have been amazing for her and looks forward to what the future holds.  She plans to attend either UC Riverside, Cal State San Marcos, or UCLA to study cognitive science, and work in research psychology.

California Military Institutes, Ashley Bond, is their January Student of the Month and according to Assistant Principal, Ms. Lawyer, she is an amazing all-around student, and has seen her grow in all aspects while attending CMI.  Ashley’s teacher, Ms. Scibilia, stated that she loves having Ashley in her class and is constantly volunteering.  Ashley admitted that it took a little getting used to the rigor, and military format, of the school, but after a while, she began to enjoy it, and loves mentoring the younger students.  She plans to attend La Sierra University or Cal Baptist, and major in psychology to become a spiritual counselor and youth mentor.

Giovanni Martinez is Perris High School’s Student of the Month, and according to Principal, Mr. Hilton, he is an example of why educators do what they do.  Giovanni is involved in a number of organizations including Mecha, Interact, and AVID, and he puts everything he has into all of it.  Giovanni shared that he was very thankful for his family, who give him the motivation to do his best.  He is also grateful for the AVID program which helped him get through his AP classes and other challenges.  Giovanni plans to attend UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, or San Diego State to major in mechanical engineering.

Heritage High School’s Student of the Month is Carolyn Probizansky.  According to Principal, Julie Zierold, Carolyn is an amazing person who has not had an easy road.  However, one would never know by her easy smile and positive attitude.  Audrey Smith, Senior Clerk at Heritage, stated that Carolyn has overcome many challenges going through the foster care system to become a determined, loving, kind, and active person.  Carolyn shared that one of the lessons she’s learned through everything is to always be positive and use what you have.  She plans to continue her education at USC, UC Irvine, or UC Santa Barbara to major in bio chemical engineering and becoming an anesthesiologist.

All of these students demonstrated a desire to work hard and have a drive to exceed others and their own expectations.  The Perris Valley Chamber and the Menifee Valley Chamber wish them the best in their endeavors.
